Publishing articles online first

Authors want their work out quickly. With online first, you publish a finished article on its own and add it to an issue later.

Publish online first

1. In Production, open the article and upload the final PDF.
2. Click Publish online first.

The article gets its own page straight away and appears on the journal site under Issues → Online first. It is cited without volume and issue numbers until its issue is published.

Moving it into an issue

Choose the issue on the article (an issue that is not published yet). When you publish that issue, the article moves into it and its page shows First published online with the original date. If you unpublish the issue again, the article stays online first.

Good to know

• Take offline on the article removes an online-first article from the site.
• DOIs are registered with Crossref when the issue is published, from the issue page.
